True 365nm UV vs “regular” UV, the difference is obvious

I’ve seen a lot of posts here where people say “UV is UV,” so I wanted to share a side-by-side that helped it finally click for me.

Same samples, same setup.
Left: UV without a ZWB2 filter.
Right: UV with a ZWB2 filter (this was taken with an Ultrafire RUV3).

Without the filter, there’s a lot of visible blue spill washing everything out. With proper filtering, the fluorescence pops much harder and details are way easier to separate from the background. The rocks themselves didn’t change ,,the signal-to-noise did. This also explains why some “395nm” or unfiltered lights feel underwhelming for mineral or forensic-style work. You’re not missing power, you’re missing spectral control. True 365nm + proper filtering seems to matter more than raw output.

Beamshot comparison: Unfiltered UV vs ZWB2 Filtered (UltraFire RUV3) on Yooperlites

fellow lumen addicts I was doing some rock hounding recently and decided to do a side-by-side beamshot test on these sodalite rocks to show why a good filter is mandatory. As you can see in the picture, the unfiltered beam just throws way too much visible purple and white stray light, which completely washes out the natural fluorescence of the minerals. For the pure beams, I have been using the UltraFire RUV3. It uses a premium emitter paired with a ZWB2 filter, and the output is an incredibly pure 365nm with almost zero visible light interference. It makes the rocks pop exactly how they are supposed to without lighting up the entire background. It is definitely a professional-grade tool for this kind of inspection, and it even has a side-switch with a built-in battery indicator which is super handy for longer night sessions in the field. For those of you doing dedicated mineral hunting or UV photography, do you prefer buying a factory-filtered light like the RUV3, or do you prefer modding a standard host and swapping in your own ZWB2 glass? Curious to see what UV setups everyone is running right now.

Overall, the RUV3 offers outstanding performance at an economical price for a user who is well versed in safe LiIon light usage. The questionable behavior of the battery indicator when the battery tube is being rotated within the head due to anodizing missing from the crest on 1/2 of the top lead-in thread is the only thing that would keep me from wholeheartedly recommending the RUV3 to anyone, be they enthusiast or muggle. It’s a fine, powerful 365nm light for an experienced user. A muggle would benefit from some safety instruction prior to ownership on my sample.
